Maguire starts? Sancho off the bench? Predicted XI v Reading

January 28, 2023

With the three-goal win over Forest during the week, the next two games give Erik ten Hag a perfect opportunity to rotate his teams and give lesser-used players an opportunity to impress. Expect today and Wednesday to be two rotated sides with a conventional best eleven in for next Saturday’s game against Palace. The manager stated in his press conference that Dalot wouldn’t play, Shaw is doubtful and maybe it was too early for Sancho.

Bearing that in mind, let’s guess his team.

In goals, expect Heaton to start behind a back four of Maguire, Lindelof, Malacia and Wan-Bissaka.

Midfield will contain one of Fred and McTomminay, maybe both. Mainoo is in with a shout too either today or Wednesday.

On the wings, it’s two out of Pellistri, Garnacho and Elanga. We’d prefer Pellistri but Elanga will probably get the nod given his seniority and lack of game time. It’s probably too soon for Sancho but it would be great to see him come off the bench.

Up front, Weghorst seems the only real choice given Martial is injured and Rashford went off on Wednesday.

Prediction

Comfortable 2-0. 3-0 if we start right.
