Disappointing United concede late goal to draw with Palace

January 18, 2023

Crystal Palace 1 Manchester United 1

[Highlights and Post Match Reaction below.]

United went into this game with a chance of making it ten wins in a row and going second in the premier league. They dominated the first half with neat and tidy football, but it wasn’t until after De Gea was forced into a world-class save that they went for Palace’s throats. Late in the half, Shaw found the ever-willing Eriksen close to the halfway line. Eriksen exchanged passes with Bruno before breaking into the box from a one-two with Rashford. From there, his cutback found the on-rushing Bruno on the edge of the box. Bruno took a touch before bending it home for one nil.

United looked in control for most of the second half, but with more and more passes going astray and Palace growing in confidence, they were always chancing their luck. That luck started to run out when, with about ten minutes left in normal time, Casemiro was forced into a last-ditch foul on Zaha. The subsequent yellow mean he’ll miss the Arsenal game. Then, in injury time, Crystal Palace scored a brilliant freekick. United tried to score in the remaining minutes, but it was too little too late.

Teams:
Crystal Palace: Guaita, Mitchell, Guehi, Richards, Clyne, Hughes, Doucoure, Edouard, Olise, Mateta, Zaha.

Manchester United: De Gea, Shaw, Martinez, Varane, Wan-Bissaka, Casemiro, Eriksen, Rashford, Fernandes, Antony, Weghorst.
Subs: Heaton, Lindelof, Maguire, Malacia, McTominay, Fred, Pellistri, Elanga, Garnacho.

Post-Match Reaction:

We controlled the game. We scored a good goal. I would not say it was a top performance, it was OK, we were in control. A great save, it was the only chance Crystal Palace produced. We have to invest more for a second goal, at 2-0 the game is over. Now you get hammered with an unlucky moment in the end. It was difficult to react though we had a chance for 2-1 with Casemiro, but we have to take the lesson. Invest more for the second goal.

Erik ten Hag

It was instinctive. He went for the ball but missed it. It could have been a dangerous situation so he wanted to stop it. So that was his reaction. But as I said, if you invest more for the second goal, you don’t have such situations. The last time we beat Arsenal without Casemiro, so this time we have to do the same. We will make a plan.

Erik ten Hag on Casemiro booking.

He did quite well. He has to make adjustments, he doesn’t know our way of playing. It was a short briefing to bring him in.
